Hi, my name is Atis Jamison. This page and those linked to it represent my love for the documentary form of movie making. I have long been a fan of documentaries, whose subjects can range from "ant colonies of the Midwestern plains" to "the sordid history of a pop superstar."
My first venture into the genre is surprisingly powerful and the average viewer will be overwhelmed by the feelings I convey and elicit. The above average viewer will be able to handle the emotions but they won't understand why. The below average viewer will slip into R.E.M. sleep shortly after the opening credits.
Living with the Fosters takes a discerning eye and focuses it on the peculiarities of family dynamics and rampant paranoia. When I first met Carl Foster it was hard to understand how someone could actually believe that in the year 2000 all things computer-related would suffer a horrific doom. After spending approximately 370 days with Carl and his family, I now feel I have the ability to empathize with those who lead lives less important and less interesting than my own.
In order to be true to the documentary form I tried to have a camera running 24 hours a day because you never know when "life" will happen. I finished the movie in February, 2001. The delay was due in large part to my devotion to the form. At the end of 1999 I had nearly 9000 hours of footage. Luckily, approximately 2500 hours were simply dark screens while everyone was sleeping. Though a colossal waste of tape, it was quite a relief, freeing me up from having to edit two weeks worth of footage. It still took most of the year 2000 for me to simply watch all the footage. By late November, 2000 I had viewed all the footage and taken extensive notes as I watched. Then, I used the next three months to whittle the 6500 hours down to 2. Those were some long days indeed.
All of that is behind me now as I present to you, the finished product. Please explore these pages and learn more about the Fosters, their friends and me. |
